The Alexander Technique
In a momentary struggle, or when learning an intense physical discipline (such as lifting or Yoga), those with wisdom inevitably suggest we give attention to "form" as a key priority to ensure balance, injury prevention, and overall effectiveness. The Alexander Technique, at it's very essence, corresponds to this edict and can raise the bar on the precise examination of form, so that maintaining a sense of ease becomes The tool you bring to your life's pursuits.
I am Mark Patron teaching since 1998. I am an agent and enthusiast of F. M. Alexander's principles. It is my honor to offer this work and share it's usefulness as a means of self-mastery.
From looking to manage day-to-day pain with something like "Text Neck", to reaching your maximum performance potential (arts, sports), Alexander's framework is a unique approach to addressing a variety of mind/body struggles, without the need for rote exercises or faith. We show you how it can work on anyone. However, the Alexander work must be sensed! The Experience is subtle, but can be had instantly with a skilled, qualified teacher.
So, please, take a second, breathe, and come explore what is before you.
The Experience
The Alexander experience is a hands-on restorative reset for your senses. It promotes a general release of the tendency to pull ourselves in, providing a deep sense of "neutral". This is the result of a system of principles imagined onto our structure that simply asks, "How can I make things easier during this act?"
“The experience you want is in the process of getting it. If you have something, give it up. Getting it, not having it, is what you want.”
Frederick M. Alexander was an aspiring orator in the late 19th century, but was beset with vocal hoarseness from doing "what came natural". He questioned whether his tendency to put himself under tension hindered his execution and so, watched in a mirror what he was doing with himself, and struggled towards a way out.
What Alexander created not only helped to encourage him out of habitual sets, but he also developed a style of communicating that very sensation through his hands.
The hands-on work in which an Alexander teacher is trained, is used to help support new and unfamiliar movement. Instead of using self-correction by moving (exercise, Yoga, etc.), my hands serve to demonstrate a sense of "non-doing" that can occur for everyone and can be learned.
When you start to recognize and redirect inappropriate tension, from the Neck on down, there becomes available a stunning experience of near effortless movement and coordination....total coordination!
